Our 2022 season is all about L’encesa, an ancient fishing art from the area of our Marina Alta. We pay tribute to all those encesers who risked their lives every winter night with the Enceser story. Today chapter 10: enceser.
“I have lived a whole season being an enceser. I have been fishing using the encesa for more than two months. After a lot of cold, fear, falls, thefts and many things learned afterward, I have gone from entering this world out of necessity to being hooked on it. I got caught up in this dangerous passion that has fed my family.
The people who love me and wait for me at home every night suffer too much, but I can no longer walk away from this fishing. The encesa is a fight against the sea. A fight with everything to lose, but that attracts you. Full of tiredness and a lot of adrenaline I arrive home every morning eager for the night to come and go back to my fishing.
Since I can no longer leave this world, my purpose for the next fishing season is to minimize as much as I can the risks, secure my fishing, and improve my fishing method. I want to make it safer, but not only for me, the last few weeks my eldest son has been accompanying me to the fishery. I was reluctant at first when he told me he wanted to come, but I know that this restlessness would turn into the passion I feel right now, and I preferred him to fish with me.
Teaching my son, the art of fishing is important so that he does not return home empty-handed, but my idea is to teach him first to take safe steps, to have in good condition the access and the fishery itself, and mainly not to have absent-mindedness. Having carelessness leads to accidents and hanging on the cliff over the sea.”
